THE STORY
What Building for Travel Taught Us About Everything Else
Travel is a demanding place to build software. Inventory changes while a customer is looking at it, suppliers disagree with each other, money moves in several currencies through several parties, and none of it is allowed to be wrong. Solving that meant building things that were never really about travel. A ledger that reconciles across suppliers is an accounting system. A layer that keeps one conversation coherent across WhatsApp, email and a call centre is omnichannel. Rostering agents across shifts and branches is HR. We had built all three, each time as a component of something else. So we stopped treating them as parts of a travel platform and started building them as products. Same systems, same standard, aimed at any business that has the same problems — which, it turns out, is most of them.

The Challenge
Pulling a Product Out of a Platform
A module that assumes a booking exists is not a product. Each one had to be taken apart from the travel domain it grew up in and given its own data model and API.
Known for One Thing
Being the travel people is an asset until you sell an accounting system. The work was showing the depth behind the travel work, not walking away from it.
Serving Both at Once
Travel clients were live and depending on us throughout. Nothing was allowed to regress while the same teams were building the new products.
